GOP picks candidate for Mahoning County auditor

Posted: Updated:
BOARDMAN, Ohio -

Mike Sciortino will not be the sole candidate from which to choose when voters cast ballots for Mahoning County Auditor in November.

The indicted incumbent Democrat will face newly selected Republican challenger Ralph Meachum.

On Sunday, local GOP leaders chose the Lake Milton resident to fill the ballot spot left vacant when Bill Reese announced his withdrawal from the race due to unexpected health problems.

According to a news release from the GOP, Meacham is a Certified Public Accountant with an MBA in Banking and Finance from Case Western Reserve University. He served as Chief Financial Officer at Butler Wick and Company and Packer Thomas, Certified Public Accountants and Business Consultants.

Noting that Meachum is a newcomer to the political scene, county GOP Chairman Mark Munroe notes that the candidate will serve as a stark contrast to “politics as usual” in Mahoning County.

Without mentioning Sciortino by name, the news release refers to the indictments handed up against him, as well as Youngstown Mayor John McNally and attorney Martin Yavorcik.

The three are accused of conspiring to cover up a plot to keep Mahoning County from moving offices from property owned by a local businessman.

A special panel has been impaneled by the Ohio Supreme Court to decide if Sciortino can continue performing his duties while the case against him is being prosecuted.

GOP officials plan to officially introduce Meachum to the public at Republican Headquarters in Boardman Monday afternoon.
