Ohio veteran to receive medals years after service

Posted: Updated:
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - A southwest Ohio veteran will receive several service medals Tuesday, nearly 50 years after serving in the Army in Vietnam.

Michael Whiteside was authorized for the medals, but never received them following his discharge in 1967. He will receive seven medals, including a Bronze Star.

Whiteside served with the 1st Infantry Division and 1st Military Police Company. Following his service, he earned a degree in elementary education from Miami University and worked as a school teacher for 30 years.

The Montgomery County Veterans Service Commission and Senator Sherrod Brown's office will present the awards in a ceremony Tuesday morning in Dayton. They hope to raise awareness for other veterans who have not received their earned medals.
