Police arrest suspect for Farrell building arson

Posted: Updated:

A suspect is accused of torching a building that forced fire crews to block off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Farrell Wednesday morning.

John Andrew Burns, 56, was arrested by Farrell police after they responded to a structure fire at 717 MLK Boulevard, that shut down the road between Roemer Blvd. and Federal Street from 4:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

Police initially spotted Burns at the rear of 731 MLK Blvd., near the burning building.  Authorities say a couch had also been set ablaze.

According to a news release from Southwest Regional Police, Burns attempted to escape officers by walking faster toward the front of the building.  He was stopped by police, who found him in possession of items that investigators say could be used to start the fires.

Burns was arrested and charged with public drunkenness, arson, causing or risking catastrophe, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and possessing instruments of crime.

There are no reports of injuries and the incident still remains under investigation by the Farrell Fire Department and Pennsylvania State Police Arson Investigator.
