Poland man dies in Boardman crash

Posted: Updated:
Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers said a Poland man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a Jeep in Boardman Township Wednesday night.

According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, Anthony Scarnecchia, 59, was riding a Honda Goldwing motorcycle eastbound on state Route 224 around 9:20 p.m. when a  Jeep Wrangler coming from the opposite direction turned into the path of the motorcycle attempting to turn south onto Hitchcock Road.

Scarnecchia was pronounced dead from his injuries at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

Scarneccia's family and co-workers said they spent the day in shock.

Officials do not believe the driver was impaired. There were no signs that texting was taking place at the time of the crash, but other factors will be examined.

"We look at not only the drivers, their ages, skills, abilities and habits. We look at the vehicle, was the vehicle working properly?," said Lt. N.J. Hendrix, with the OSHP Canfield Post.

The 16-year-old girl, from Youngstown, who was driving the Jeep was not injured.

A passenger in the Jeep was treated for minor injuries at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman.

At this point, it's too early to know if charges will be filed.

"We'll get all the evidence together and we'll submit our report to the juvenile prosecutor's office or prosecutor's office to see if any charges will be filed," said Hendrix.

The names of the teen driving the Jeep and her passenger, are not being released because both are juveniles.

Traffic in the eastbound lane of Route 224 was blocked for more than an hour as the Highway Patrol gathered information about the crash.
