Austintown School District adds "green" buses to fleet

Posted: Updated:

When you see yellow in Austintown, you should think green.

The Austintown School District unveiled 14 new buses on Thursday, that run on liquid propane.

The district was designated a three star Ohio green fleet by the clean fuels statewide program.

A $1.3 million dollar grant was awarded to the district to buy and run the propane buses.

"It is the cleanest burning fuel, and here in Austintown, we are trying to be the leaders in technology, and we are trying to leave a little less behind for the children we transport," said Colleen Murphy-Penk, director of transportation.

School officials said although the buses cost a few thousand dollars more than your average school bus, propane is cheaper and cleaner than diesel.
