YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

A study conducted by Feeding America revealed some disturbing numbers on hunger in the U.S. and here in the Mahoning Valley.

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley is one of more than 200 Feeding America Food Banks that participated in the study.

The report found that 1 in 5 children nationally, and 1 in 4 children locally are food insecure, meaning they may not know where their next meal is coming from.

Second Harvest expects to distribute more than nine million pounds of food this year.

"Three million of that nine million is produce, so people are getting some nutrition. They're getting some variety in the their meals and we just feel good that we can provide that for the pantries and for the people who are struggling in the Valley," said Mike Iberis, Executive Director.

Second Harvest feeds an estimated 15,000 people per week, and more than half are children and seniors.
