Democrat brings campaign for Ohio Auditor to Valley

Posted: Updated:

State Auditor Candidate John Patrick Carney stopped in the Valley Monday to discuss the loss of public money to charter schools.

Carney says, across Ohio, nearly half a billion dollars has been taken from public schools with A ratings and given to failing charter schools. Carney says the Valley is no exception.

"Specifically, in the Mahoning Valley, an excess of two and half million dollars had gone from excellent public schools to D and F charter schools. And similarly, in Trumbull County, we've watched more than two million dollars siphoned off from public schools go to failing charter schools," Carney said.

Carney introduced House Bill 520 to mandate open records for charter schools. Ohio Senator Joe Schiavoni, who accompanied Carney during his visit, introduced similar legislation in the State Senate.
