Vienna airlift wing aids Iraqi refugees

Posted: Updated:
VIENNA, Ohio -

The 910th Airlift Wing is helping with humanitarian efforts in Iraq.

Crew members from the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna have flown five missions to Northern Iraq in an effort to aid 200,000 displaced refugees settled in the country's Jurdistan region. So far, they have dropped nearly 52 tons of humanitarian aid – including meals and bottles of water.

Justin Speight of the 910th Wing says the crew has also been assisting Iraqis to drop humanitarian aid out of their C-130's.

“The objective of your mission was … to provide and assist the Iraqis with the tactics and training in procedures needed to perform their own airdrop missions out of their C-130's,”Speight said. “So prior to our engagement and advisement, the Iraqis were not able to actually do successful airdrops.”

The refugees became displaced when the city of Sinjar and its neighboring areas were seized by Islamic militants.
