ODP instates 60-day examination on Polivka

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ohio -

There has been some misinformation that Dan Polivka was to be removed from office Wednesday night – that was never the case.

Instead, the executive committee of the Ohio Democratic Party voted unanimously to move forward with a 60-day examination process on the complaint against the Trumbull Democratic Party Chairman Dan Polivka. The complaint itself was over the secret ballot voting that took place July 26th to fill the seat of the late Trumbull County Commissioner Paul Heltzel.

ODP Chairman Chris Redfern nominated Tim Burke – the chair of Hamilton County's Democratic Party – to examine the issue.

The chairman of Mahoning County's Democratic Party read the resolution and made the first motion on Wednesday night, which was then second-ed by State Representative Sean O'Brien.

The examination process will determine whether sanctions will continue and if Polivka will be censured.

Polivka, who is not on the executive committee, did not get a chance to speak at the meeting. Afterward, he was able to speak with 21 News.

“The candidates are complaining they don't have it. They already paid the assessment,” Polivka said. “It's right in their own constitution that you cannot take a county's … vote builder unless they are not in good standing.”

When we spoke with Chris Redfern, he – on the other hand – seemed to disagree.

“There's a chapter for malfeasance and kinds of actions that a chair or anyone may encounter that allows some flexibility for me to do the things that are necessary to keep order within the party,” Redfern said.

Over the past several weeks, chairman Polivka assembled a special committee to modify the Trumbull County Democratic Party's bylaws to put them in accordance with the ODP and DNC bylaws.

This means that within this 60-day period, if Trumbull's executive committee approves those changes and does a re-vote on the commissioner's seat – which has now been filled by Mauro Cantalamessa – ODP Chairman Redfern will drop the sanctions and the censure process.
