Report: Energy drilling ruined some PA water wells

HARRISBURG, Pa. -

For the first time, the Department of Environmental Protection has released details showing 248 cases of water wells ruined by drilling in Pennsylvania.

Regulators determined that oil or natural gas drilling or related activities impacted the private drinking water wells from 2008 to 20-14.

Problems include methane gas contamination, spills of waste water and other pollutants, and wells that went dry or were otherwise undrinkable.

The records show that some of the problems were temporary.
