Austintown Elementary School offers calming environment for students

Posted: Updated:

Austintown schools are taking a proactive approach to helping young students deal with the sometimes overwhelming sights and sounds they experience at school.

Riding a school bus, lots of new faces, leaving mom and dad and wearing a back pack can all impact a child's ability to pay attention and participate effectively in the school environment.

As a result, when the Austintown Local School District went back into session last week, students at the elementary school had a sensory room available to help calm jitters.

Becky Morris, District Administrator, says the rooms are available to all students. “Rooms typically have stations, with active areas, calming areas, and various types of sensory activities.”, said Morris. The rooms also have dim lighting, soothing colors, and swings.

The school is inviting families to an open house on Thursday, September 4th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. to inspect the new sensory room.
