Parents: Son, 27, remorseful in woman's robbery

SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) - The parents of a 27-year-old Pennsylvania man charged with rousting an 82-year-old woman from bed so she could withdraw money from automatic teller machines say he is remorseful, but wasn't in his right mind at the time.

Rodger and Jullie Oakes made those comments Tuesday after their son, William Thompson II, waived his right to a preliminary hearing on the charges Tuesday. He must now stand trial.

The (Somerset) Daily American ( ) reports Thompson allegedly used a BB-pistol to awaken and force the victim to accompany him about 3 a.m. Aug. 20.

Jullie Oakes says there's no excuse for her son's actions. But she says he had recently tried suicide and was released from a mental health unit just days before the incident.
