Open house set for YSU Veterans Resource Center

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

When it comes to service to military students and veterans Youngstown State University goes above and beyond.

The new 6,000 square foot, $1.3 million Veterans Resource Center is another example of what sets YSU apart from other Ohio colleges.

"That we are the only university that has a stand alone veterans center in Ohio," said Rick Williams, Resource Center Director.

The second floor of the center features offices, classrooms and a conference room that is expandable.

"On this side we have a study hall, on this side we have a conference room, open the wall and we have a classroom," said Williams.

The ground level includes a lounge area. "It's a great place to just come and sit and read and watch some TV." added Williams.  The lounge also offers PlayStation and X-Box gaming on a smart TV. The centers computer lab is state of the art.

"We have seven PCs and two MAC computers, and our MACs have Skype capability so we've had people come in and Skype with their friends in Afghanistan," Williams said.

The resource center is what attracted Air Force veteran Jesse Gamble to YSU.  "They were in the process of building it and I decided to come back to YSU become of that," Gamble said.

The center still needs to raise $280,000 dollars to finish paying off the building, and once that's done Williams says they plan continue fund raising for a new program.

"We want to establish an endowment through the foundation office to offer military and veterans scholarships".

YSU has been rated a military friendly university for the past six years by G.I. Joe Jobs magazine and was recently rated as one of the top 100 military friendly universities in the country by Military Times magazine.

The center is having two open house events this week. One will be held on Friday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm for military, faculty and staff. A second open house, scheduled on Saturday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, is open to the public.
