YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -
Mahoning County Commissioners have declared February "No One Eats Alone" month in recognition of the Sandy Hook Promise.
Parents of students who were killed in the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012 reached out Mahoning County Juvenile Court Judge Theresa Dellick asking for the county's participation in the national No One Eats Alone Day. Throughout the month of February, schools across the country, including schools here in Mahoning County, will take part in the student-led initiative. The program, which takes place during lunch, encourages students to make sure every child has a friend to sit with at lunch.
"They target middle school because that is where the split begins. Elementary school, all of the kids, all of the kids play together. If you know when they have birthday parties, everyone in the class is invited. When they get to middle school, the differences start and that is why this is trying to reach beyond differences, showing that we are all still a society, and we should all reach out to each other," said Dellick.
Judge Dellick said some of the parents of the Sandy Hook victims will be at a seminar at the Lake Club in Poland in February.
