Unarmed suspects shot by Cleveland officers 47 times

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND (AP) - A forensic pathologist says two unarmed suspects were hit by a total of 47 shots fired by Cleveland police officers following a high-speed chase in November 2012.

Dr. Joseph Felo, who works for the Cuyahoga County medical examiner's office, testified Thursday in the trial of Officer Michael Brelo.

Brelo was charged with voluntary manslaughter because prosecutors say he stood on the hood of the suspects' car and fired down into the windshield after Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams were no longer a threat.

Felo testified that 13 of the 24 shots that hit Williams were fired with a downward trajectory. He said 15 of the 23 shots that hit Russell had a downward trajectory.

He acknowledged it's impossible to tell for sure from which direction shots were fired.
