The Ohio State Highway Patrol will announce locations for OVI checkpoints in Mahoning county at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The Highway Patrol says the checkpoints, funded by federal grant funds, are planned to deter and intercept impaired drivers.

The patrol says that based on provisional data, there were 315 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 349 people were killed last year in Ohio.

"State troopers make on average 25,000 OVI arrests each year in an attempt to combat these dangerous drivers. OVI checkpoints are designed to not only deter impaired driving, but to proactively remove these dangerous drivers from our roadways,” said Lt. N. Hendrix, Commander of the Canfield Post.

Support for the sobriety checkpoints will be provided by local law enforcement agencies.
