Chief explains appearance of Sharon Police Officer in TV ad

Posted: Updated:

The Sharon Police Chief is beating the public to any criticism that may come for allowing an officer to appear in a television commercial.

Police Chief Gerald Smith said the officer used in a Reyers Shoe Store commercial was off duty when the commercial was shot, and he was not paid for his appearance.

The advertisement was recorded in the Sharon City Jail and references "shoe jail."

Smith said the commercial is "tasteful and helps a local, long standing business of Sharon."

The police chief said the police department supports local businesses and is happy to assist them in bringing visitors to the city.

Reyers Shoe Store owner Mark Jubelirer said the commercial is a "display of the great respect we as a family business have for the Sharon Police Department and all the police departments in our great country."

When the shooting of the commercial was complete, Reyers donated money to the Sharon Police Department general fund to support the department's efforts in purchasing a canine unit.
