Four students have been taken into custody after a gun scare at Volney Rodgers Middle School Wednesday morning.

The Director of Communications at Youngstown City Schools, Yvonne Mathis, says three female students and one male student were taken to the Juvenile Justice Center after the incident.

Mathis said all four students handled the BB gun and were taken into custody as protocol. .

The Youngstown Police Department was called out to the Middle School around 8 a.m.

Several students saw what appeared to be a small-caliber handgun and reported the gun to middle school officials immediately.

Investigators say there was no threat since the weapon turned out to be a BB gun.

“The students were never on lock down or any other of the higher level security issues that we employ. Everything was taken care of efficiently and effectively,” said Assistant Superintendent for Youngstown City Schools, Dr. Milton A. Walters.

Officials say they recovered the BB gun immediately in one of the students' lockers.
