Danny Dirienzo has been a skateboarder for 15 years.

"I've done baseball, music, everything and there's just something about skateboarding I can't get enough of," said Dirienzo.

Dirienzo says finding a good quality skatepark around the Mahoning Valley is difficult.

"Good outdoor concrete park, we drive about an hour, either to cleveland or pittsburgh," he said.

That's why Danny is part of a group that is urging the city of Youngstown to build a skatepark. When Youngstown's Park Director, Bob Burke heard the news, he was excited.

"Ever since I got this job, I always thought there should be something for the older kids to do," said Burke.

Burke told the group to get community feedback, to see if there was enough interest. Within three days, a petition on change.org to bring a skatepark to Youngstown had over 800 signatures.

Mandy Tucker, who is organizing the effort, says the feedback is wonderful.

"Kids, adults, a lot of bmx riders and skateboarders are saying we need this, we want this in our city," said Tucker.

One of the locations that's being discussed for the new skatepark is between the Covelli Centre and the Market Street bridge.

Burke believes the skatepark could be an incredible asset, not only for the skateboarding community, but the city as well.

"You bring something like this to a community like Youngstown, it becomes a destination, people then travel from Pittsburgh and Cleveland and New York," says Burke. "Not only do they skate, they need a place to stay, they need to eat, its an economic impact having a quality park like that."

The city also told the skateboarders they'll need to do some fundraising. Burke says a good quality skatepark starts at around 500-thousand dollars.
