Petersburg family survives night of terror

Posted: Updated:
PETERSBURG, Ohio -

A Springfield Township family is recovering from a night that may have seemed like a scene from a horror movie.

But the experience was all too real for a family living with three children at a home on the 5100 block of East Garfield Road.

They tell police that they were startled by someone screaming and pounding on their door at 3 a.m. Friday.

According to police reports, the would be intruder punched in a window and tried to climb inside.

At the same time, the man, who was known to the family, was urging the homeowner to come outside.

The homeowner tells police he had armed himself with a baseball bat in case the intruder got in.

At some point, the screen door of the home was torn off.

The residents say several gunshots were fired outside just before they felt the whole house shake when it was rammed by an S-U-V, damaging the deck and smashing into the kitchen wall.

The black Ford Explorer then drove away, but was soon spotted by a New Middletown Police officer at the Petersburg Cemetery on Route 170.

The officer says that when the driver got out of the S-U-V and rushed toward him, the officer deployed his taser, subduing the suspect.

Other officers arrived at the cemetery and arrested the man, identified as Robert Edward Stanley, 34, of Darlington, Pa.

Police say Stanley had a knife in his pocket. Inside his vehicle they found a rifle with a broken stock.

Back at the crime scene, police inspecting damage to the home also found that the rear windows of two parked vehicles had been smashed out.

Two bullet holes were found in one of the cars.

In addition, officers recovered live and spent ammunition outside the home as evidence.

Stanley faces charges including aggravated burglary, felonious assault and using weapons while intoxicated.
