Donation gives Canfield canine new protective vest

Posted: Updated:

A Canfield canine has been equipped with a new ballistic vest thanks to a resident's donation.

The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, gave directly to the police department's K9 program for the benefit of their veteran, Thor.

Police say Thor's new vest will help protect him against blades, sharp objects, and pistol rounds.  The vests cost approximately $900 and are similar to the ones worn by Canfield's officers.

Thor started his service with Canfield's K9 unit in 2010 and is scheduled to retire in Spring 2017.

A dual-purpose dog, Thor, according to police, handles suspect tracking and apprehension, article searches, drug detection, and large crowd control.

Police expressed their thanks for the donation and said that, "Thor is a huge asset to our community and this generous contribution will help ensure his safety and continued service to Canfield."
