Valley schools to receive $915,000 grant

Posted: Updated:

Nine school districts in the Valley are being awarded a $915,000 Straight A Grant.

The literacy grant will benefit Campbell, Austintown, Beaver Local, Brookfield, Newbury, West Branch, Windham, United Local and Youngstown Community schools.

The Straight A Grant is one of 23 awarded by the state, and is based on an Ohio State Program called the Literacy Collaborative.

"We know this proven framework will yield positive results for all of the children, not only Campbell, but all the surrounding partner districts," said Campbell Superintendent Matthew Bowen.

The money will allow for the hiring and training of 13 literacy coaches to institute the program in these school districts.

"This is more than just a reading program; t's an investment in teachers to enable them to individually assess and instruct each child," says one of the grant writers, MCESC Teaching and Learning Director Kim Davis. "As grant administrators, we will monitor the data and make sure the program strictly follows Ohio State's Literacy Collaborative Framework, so that the results are certain. Each of these 9 school districts is sure to see results."
