Local Special Olympics athletes heading to Columbus

The Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disability athletes are heading down to Columbus to compete in the Special Olympics Summer Games.

The athletes will leave Friday at 8 a.m. and will compete in track and field events and volleyball.

The athletes will return to Leonard Kurtz School in Austintown Sunday between 6 and 6:30 p.m. 

They will be escorted back to the school by the Austintown Police, Austintown Fire, the State Highway Patrol and the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department. Law enforcement officers will meet them getting off Interstate 80 to State Route 46.

They're also asking for more people to come out and welcome them home! Community members are welcome to head out to State Route 46 to New Road to Woodland Trace to Woodhurt and wave them in.

    Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the state transportation director are proposing an 18 cent per gallon increase in the state gas tax.
