Audit: More than $2.5 billion food stamp benefits issued in 2015

Posted: Updated:

State Auditor Dave Yost released the findings of an audit of Ohio's food stamp program on Tuesday.

The audit for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services' Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Electronic Benefit Transfer Card— also known as SNAP EBT— used data from January 1, 2015, to June 30, 2015.

According to the audit, approximately $2.5 billion in SNAP benefits were issued to more than 824,000 people.

The audit found 36 cases where deceased individuals were still receiving benefits a year after they died, amounting to approximately $24,000.

The report states that almost $29 million of benefits were used out of state, which may point to recipients who do not live in the state, who may be receiving benefits in more than one state, or who may be exchanging their EBT card for cash or other commodities.
