Stambaugh Golf Course to seek liquor permit

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

A Youngstown city-owned golf course has a plan to attract more golfers to the 9-hole course.

The director of the parks and recreation department of the city of Youngstown is asking for a permit for beer sales.
Director Robert Burke says the course needs beer sales to attract more leagues to the course.

He says he has contacted many leagues to come to Stambaugh but they usually decline because you cannot drink alcohol on the course.
An inspector is expected to come to Stambaugh within the next two weeks to see if the course qualifies for a permit.

One of the stumbling blocks could be the fact that fifth avenue splits the course in half and there could be concerns about gold carts crossing the roadway if the driver is drinking.

Burke says if they do get the permit he expects a major increase in the number of people using the course on a daily basis.
