Strong storms cause flooding, power outages, evacuations

Posted: Updated:

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Strong storms have rolled through Pennsylvania, flooding roads, leaving thousands without power and causing protesters and the media at the Democratic convention to take shelter.

Lightning, heavy rain and strong winds caused chaos outside the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Monday, the first day of the convention.

City officials urged protesters to seek shelter. Organizers also recommended that media members evacuate a tent outside.

The storms also caused flash flooding around the state.

WCAU-TV reports a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority bus and a car got stuck in high water in Bensalem Township.

Interstate 76 eastbound also was shut down for hours in Montgomery County to due flooding.

In the Lehigh Valley, The Morning Call reports officials believe lightning is to blame for a fire at an American Legion hall in Whitehall Township.
