Coroner: Half-marathoner's death stemmed from heat stroke

Posted: Updated:

EAST GREENVILLE, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say heat stroke complications killed a runner who collapsed during a half-marathon in suburban Philadelphia earlier this month.

The Lehigh County coroner's office said 23-year-old John McMordie of Perkasie was taking part in the half-marathon Aug. 21 in East Greenville, Montgomery County.

Officials said he collapsed shortly before 10 a.m. during the 13.1-mile race and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, where he was pronounced dead Friday.

An autopsy performed Saturday concluded that the death was due to complications of heat stroke. The manner of death was ruled accidental.
