Southwest Ohio festival serves up 7 tons of sauerkraut

WAYNESVILLE, Ohio (AP) - A festival featuring dishes made with fermented cabbage returns this weekend to southwest Ohio.

While food is the main draw of the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival, arts and crafts from more than 450 artisans also will be for sale.

The event, which runs Saturday and Sunday, got its start as a sidewalk sale by merchants in 1970.

Officials say an estimated 1,500 people attended the inaugural festival. That's grown to 350,000 patrons who consume some seven tons of sauerkraut.

Dishes for sale include pizza, doughnuts and fudge containing sauerkraut. The traditional cabbage rolls are a top item, too.

Proceeds from the event go toward scholarships for high school seniors from the Wayne Local School District.
