Polls: Portman widens lead over Strickland as they prepare to debate

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

As challenger Ted Strickland prepares to debate Republican Senator Rob Portman in the 21 WFMJ studios today, the former Ohio Governor has a way to go to catch up with the Republican incumbent if recent polls are any indication.

Polling figures collected after Sunday's Presidential debate show Portman with a double digit lead over Strickland.

An NBC/WSJ poll has Rob Portman with a 55% to 37% lead over Strickland.

A poll conducted by Emerson College October has Portman ahead of Strickland 47% to 30%.

The polls were conducted on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, which was also after the release of a 2005 recording of Trump making lewd comments about women.

Portman distanced himself from Trump on Sunday when he issued a statement saying he would not be voting for the GOP nominee as a result of the comments.

There is no indication that Portman's defection from Trump has hurt him politically.

The NBC and Emerson polls showing Portman leading Strickland by 18% and 17% respectively, are even greater margins than the 11% lead Portman had in a CBS poll conducted one week before.

21 News will host Ohio’s first U.S. Senate Debate between Portman and Strickland. You can watch the debate live at noon today on 21 WFMJ, on wfmj.com, on our Facebook page or by clicking here
