Youngstown Water Department trying to find source of discolored water

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

The Youngstown Water Department began cutting into a water supply pipe on Thalia Avenue near Youngstown-Poland Road on Monday in an attempt to determine what is causing discolored water.

Residents have been experiencing the discolored water for months, and despite attempts by the city to resolve the issue, the water is still dirty.

Flushing a nearby hydrant remedies the problem temporarily, but the discolored water keeps coming back.

The water department has yet to determine the problem, but removed a piece of pipe to inspect it.

Water Commissioner Gene Leeson told 21 News that there is a trace amount of iron in the water coming into homes along Thalia Avenue. Leeson says it is about the same amount of iron that is found in well water and is safe for drinking.
