81-year-old Columbus city auditor won't seek re-election

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The man who has overseen finances for the city of Columbus since 1969 says he won't seek re-election next year.

Auditor Hugh Dorrian has worked in city government for 51 years, including 12 terms as auditor.

The 81-year-old Dorrian has been auditor since he appointed in September 1969.

Dorrian tells the Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/2frCysu ) that public service is a noble profession.

Mayor Andrew Ginther said he cannot imagine City Hall without the auditor, who's known universally as "Mr. Dorrian."

Dorrian is known for his conservative approach to city finances, often predicting city revenue on the low end.

Dorrian is a U.S. Army veteran and an Ohio State University graduate.
