Man shot after mental health facility stabbing faces charges

Posted: Updated:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Authorities say an armed man who stabbed five people at a mental health facility near Pittsburgh before he was shot by police will be charged with attempted homicide.

Allegheny County police said Saturday that 38-year-old Dustin Johnson will also face charges of aggravated assault, attempted arson and risking a catastrophe following Friday afternoon's attack at Turtle Creek Valley Mental Health/Mental Retardation in Homestead, just southeast of Pittsburgh.

Authorities say Johnson dropped his knife but not the gun before he was shot by SWAT officers. Police entered after texts from inside indicated that bleeding victims needed help.

Johnson underwent surgery for multiple gunshot wounds and is recovering in intensive care.

Authorities say one resident was listed in critical condition and another in stable condition. Three employees were in stable condition.
