Work begins to clear up brown water in Youngstown neighborhood

YOUNGSTOWN (AP) -

Work is underway to correct a problem that has caused brown water to pour from faucets for several months in homes in a neighborhood on Youngstown's South Side.

After testing pipes along Thalia Avenue, the Youngstown Water Department concluded that sediment has been building up in the low parts of sagging water lines.

To resolve the problem, a contractor began work Monday to replace 1,500 feet of the main water line extending from Thalia to Sheridan Road.

The $241,000 project should take four to six weeks to complete.

No interruption in service is expected.

Some first responders in the Valley are treating drug stops in cars more carefully since they are seeing an increase in exposure to powerful opioids like Fentanyl and Carfentanil. The Ohio State Highway Patrol says officers are taking the extra precaution of using respirators to retrieve drugs from cars. A recent example was seen Wednesday afternoon outside a Dunkin Donuts on West Liberty Street in Weathersfield Township.
