Austintown lake and dam off the auction block - News weather sports for Youngstown-Warren Ohio

Austintown lake and dam off the auction block

Posted: Updated:

Part of a lake and a crumbling dam in an Austintown neighborhood are off the auction block for now.

Mahoning County Auditor Ralph Meacham announced on Tuesday that Woodside Lake and dam have been removed from a list of properties up for a sheriff's sale on Wednesday.

After a doctor who owned the Meridian Road property passed away, the lake, dam and lake ended up in Mahoning County's hands.

After two sheriff's sales with no buyers, the state now owns the property.

Meacham tells us the dam and its crumbling walls have failed hydrological tests as well as engineering studies.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources wants the level of the lake lowered by 2 feet to keep property damage at a minimum downstream should the dam fail.

The half million to one million dollar repair job, which the state expects to take place in the next year or so, would be the responsibility of whoever buys the property.

Meachum says the auction of the property was removed from the sale to allow homeowners around the lake and other unnamed parties to explore ways to buy the property and make repairs.

The sheriff's sale of 20 other properties will still take place Wednesday at 11a.m. in the Mahoning County Commissioner's Hearing Room.
