Tim Ryan loses bid for House Minority Leader

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has defeated a challenge by Valley Congressman Tim Ryan to retain her role as House Minority Leader.

The vote was 134 for Pelosi and 63 for Ryan.

Ryan spoke to party members before the vote was taken.

Ryan challenged Pelosi following surprise losses by the Democratic Party in the November elections.

"Over the last 18 years, Democrats have only been in the majority of the House of Representatives for two terms," Ryan said in a letter to colleagues.

Ryan has said he had never planned on seeking a leadership role in the House, but said that after this election every Democrat needs to reevaluate their roles.

Ryan was a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton.

Ryan, who currently sits on the House Appropriations committee, has been a member of Congress since 2003, when he took over the seat previously held by former Congressman Jim Traficant.

The House Minority leader's job is to act as a spokesperson for the party's agenda and to organize legislative strategy.
