Feds issue report on Columbiana County gas pipeline

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

A controversial natural gas pipeline that would travel through Columbiana County has moved closer to becoming a reality.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Wednesday released a final report finding that although the Nexus pipeline will likely have some adverse ecological impacts, the benefits will outweigh those effects.

The project would connect the existing Kensington Processing Plant in Columbiana County to two other pipelines.

The underground pipeline, more than three feet in diameter, would carry products from the shale gas fields of Eastern Ohio to Michigan and Canada.

The project is opposed by some environmental advocates and communities along the route, who have been lobbying for an alternate route.

Developers are hoping to begin the project early next year.
