Youngstown schools introducing all-day preschool

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

Youngstown City Schools and Alta Head Start have partnered to provide children with access preschool.

Funding from the state is enabling the district to offer all-day preschool at most of its elementary school buildings.

Before this year, the district offered only a half-day program.

The preschool is available for 3- to 5-year-olds who live within the city school district.

There is no cost to families for their children to attend.

The 22 preschool classrooms are located in Choffin Career and Technical Center, Harding, Martin Luther King, Paul C. Bunn, William Holmes McGuffey, Williamson and Taft elementary schools and at Wilson Programs of Progress.

Krish Mohip, city schools chief executive officer, pointed out that preschool prepares young children for kindergarten which has become more academically-focused in recent years.

“The children get to spend more time learning about and getting prepared for school and for the way a school day is structured,” Mohip said. “They learn from a young age how to work collaboratively.”

The Youngstown City School District and Alta Head Start are collaborating with one classroom at Choffin Career and Technical Center, Harding, Martin Luther King, Taft, Paul C. Bunn, Wilson and two classrooms at McGuffey. With the collaboration, each class will have two qualified teachers and an educational assistant.

Two additional city school teachers are housed in a classroom at the Head Start McCartney Road and Renaissance Center locations.
