A Champion Township Police officer is hospitalized with serious injuries after his cruiser rolled over as he was responding to an emergency call Saturday morning.

State troopers say Champion Police Sergeant Jeff White was trapped in his cruiser after it went off North Park Road while trying to avoid another vehicle

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says White's cruiser rolled over several times.

Sgt. White was removed from the wreckage by rescue crews and taken to Trumbull Memorial hospital for treatment of injuries that troopers describe as serious, but not life-threatening.

White was on his way to assist Trumbull County Sheriff's Deputies apprehend a suspect who had crashed his vehicle, then fled on foot and stole a gun from another vehicle in the area.

The suspect was captured after manhunt in a wooded area near State Route 45 and Bristol Champion Townline Road.

Jamie Butler, 24, of Ambridge, Pa., has been booked into the Trumbull County Jail on charges of  receiving stolen property, obstructing official business, theft and trespassing.

He's being held on $15,000 bond pending arraignment in Newton Falls Municipal Court.
