Shenango Township police warn of sexual predator hoax

SHENANGO TOWNSHIP, Lawrence Co., Pa. -

People living in a Lawrence County community have been the victims of a hoax according to police.

State Police and Shenango Township Police issued a media release on Monday in response to complaints about suspicious letters being circulated in the Links Drive area of the township.

The anonymous letters warn residents that a sexual predator from Ohio has moved into the area and is still being investigated by authorities in Ohio.

Police say the information in the letter is unfounded.

Trooper Joseph Vascetti tells 21 News that the letters, which arrived by the U.S. Mail at various addresses, appeared to be from the Pittsburgh area.

Police say they are not releasing the identity of the person named in the letters since the information was deemed to be bogus.

Vascetti says police are trying to identify the sender of the letters, who could face charges.

State police say in Pennsylvania, members of a community are notified of sexual offenders in person and not by letters of phone messages.

The release says that any questions concerning Megan's Law requirements in Pennsylvania should be directed to the State Police Megan's Law Unit at 866-771-3170.
