College Baseball: YSU vs. Kent

Updated:
KENT, Ohio -

Andrew Kendrick hit his 16th home run of the season as the Youngstown State baseball team lost 13-6 to Kent State at Schoonover Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Kendrick's home run came in the top of the third inning and gave the Penguins a 4-3 lead. Kent State tied the score in the bottom of the inning, and the Golden Flashes gained separation by scoring three runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth.

In addition to Kendrick's offense, Anthony Rohan, Alex Larivee and Nico Padovan each had two hits for the Penguins. Youngstown State used nine different pitchers in the game.

Josh Hollander had two hits and four RBIs to lead Kent State, which improved to 34-14. Youngstown State's record is now 15-37.

Youngstown State scored three runs in the top of the first as Padovan and Trey Bridis both had RBIs and Kendrick scored on a wild pitch. Kent State scored twice in the bottom of the inning without recording a hit – three Golden Flashes walked and two more were hit by pitches – to get within a run. Kent State tied the score at 3-3 on Mason Mamarella's RBI single in the second.

Kendrick's solo home run in the third came immediately after the Penguins hit into their first of four double plays in the game. It gave YSU its final lead of the night at 4-3. Hollander's sacrifice fly tied the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the third, and four straight two-out hits led to three Kent State runs in the fifth. Hollander then hit a three-run triple and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning as the Golden Flashes extended their lead to 11-4.

YSU scored twice in the top of the seventh as Rohan singled in Anthony Santoro and Evan Cheng scored on an error. Kent State matched the Penguins in the bottom of the inning as Pete Schuler hit a two-run homer.

Youngstown State will begin its final series of the season against Rider on Thursday at 5 p.m.
