Demolition begins on historic Ohio home built in the 1830s

HILLSBORO, Ohio (AP) - The 1830s era Mother Thompson House in Ohio is being demolished for a new home to be built on its spacious lot.

Owner Greg Rand tells The Times-Gazette of Hillsboro ( his original plan was to build a new home inside the original exterior walls.

That plan was abandoned after the house started to fall during construction. Rand says the house is "just too far gone."

The house was home to an early participant in the temperance movement, Mother Eliza Jane Thompson. Her father, the former governor of Ohio, built the home.

Tax records show the home was built in either 1831 or 1832. Thompson lived there until her death in 1905.

Several parts of the home will be salvaged, including the stone foundation and metal nails.
