CDC to begin physical exams in Boardman for national health survey

BOARDMAN, Ohio -

Several hundred Mahoning County residents will walk through the doors of several mobile trailers, parked just outside of the Southern Park Mall in Boardman, to participate in an opportunity that measures the health status of the United States.

"The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey is the most comprehensive survey of American's health," said Jenni Echols with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC.

The CDC travels to 15 different counties across the United States each year to conduct these surveys.

In all, 5,000 Americans ranging in age from infants to the elderly are invited to participate in a home health survey and comprehensive physical exam.

"Health researchers and statisticians will analyze that information and come up with ideas that improve American's health over time," said Echols.  "One of the major benefits for the individuals chosen is they will get a very detailed thorough medical examination that is free."

Participants will also receive a stipend for their participation, as well as a reimbursement for travel.

The CDC expects to wrap up its research in Mahoning County by the end of summer.
