American Legion conducts flag burning ceremony in Austintown

Posted: Updated:

On Flag Day Wednesday, the American Legion continued an 80-year-old tradition for the disposal of unserviceable American flags.

At a ceremony in Austintown, Legion members burned nearly 1,000 worn and tattered flags that were dropped off at collection boxes over the past year.

The Legion says the ceremony shows respect for the flag, which is a symbol of freedom and a tribute to all those who have fought and died to protect that freedom.

"To just throw them away as a piece of garbage is unheard of and should never be done," said Sam Swoger of American Legion Post 301.

The Legion began its ceremonial flag disposal tradition in 1937.
