Congressman Bill Johnson played in the congressional baseball game for charity on Thursday evening to honor his friend and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

Players, including Johnson, wore Louisiana State University hats, which is where Scalise attended.

Johnson said he hopes this game continues the renewed interest in being Americans first and identifying with a political party second.

Scalise was wounded when James Hodgkinson opened fire on a baseball field where members of Congress were practicing on Wednesday.

Johnson left the practice early and was only gone five to 10 minutes before he learned about the shootings.

He told police he witnessed a man getting in and out of a van in the middle of the road before the gunfire broke out.

“The reaction of the Capitol Hill police prevented what could have been a massacre,” Johnson said.
