Boy dies after slipping into Pennsylvania creek

Posted: Updated:

TARENTUM, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say a 10-year-old boy was found dead after disappearing in a Pennsylvania creek.

Officials in western Pennsylvania's Allegheny County said the boy was wading Saturday afternoon in Bulls Creek, which flows into the Allegheny River.

Sgt. Ryan Hanford of the Tarentum police department said witnesses reported that the boy had been standing in shallow water under the Tarentum Bridge, but stepped into a deeper part of the creek and did not surface.

Hanford said relatives told him the boy wasn't a strong swimmer. Emergency responders were called at about 4:45 p.m. Saturday, and Hanford said he jumped into the water to search.

The Murrysville Dive Team found the boy's body after about a half-hour of searching. The Allegheny County medical examiner's office identified the victim as 10-year-old Isiah Helenkamp.
