Muscle Connection H.S. Football Preview: Cardinal Mooney

Posted: Updated:

The Cardinal Mooney football team is looking to make it to back-to-back playoff appearances.

The Cardinals are counting on 14 upperclassmen to keep them flying high.

"Our new seniors have done a great job of creating a positive atmosphere and doing a great job of leading and kind of jelling everyone together," said head coach P.J. Fecko.

Jelling is exactly what Fecko is counting on, with the bulk of his 12 starters returning having experience on the interior line.

"Vinny Gentile, an offensive lineman, and Alex Maxin, an offensive lineman, Olesh, and Weaver," said Fecko. "Those guys are going to be very important for us. They're going to have to hold it together for everyone. Some younger guys are going to have to step up in the skill positions and we have a returning quarterback in the skill position, which sure helps."

Quarterback Antonio Page had a solid sophomore season, throwing for 617 yards and rushing for 428 yards.

However, the position won't be handed to him. "Luke Fulton is a guy that's also pushing at quarterback, so we'll see what happens with those two," said Fecko.

The middle of the Cardinals defense is untested.  "We're going to have young linebackers and a couple of guys in the secondary that have some experience, that will help," said Fecko.

The young corp of linebackers need to step up with Mooney playing five road game to begin the season.

"We have a gauntlet of a schedule, it's a brutal schedule," said Fecko.
