Muscle Connection H.S. Football Preview: Niles Red Dragons

NILES, Ohio -

The Niles Red Dragons haven't had a winning season since 2012.  They hope to get over the hump in 2017.

They've been close with a pair of 5-5 records (2016 and 2013) but, haven't been on the positive side since they finished 8-2 in 2012.

They return running back Robbie Savin who ran for more than 1,000 yards last year. "He's an all around great player and he's a guy that has to really step up and be that ball control guy," said coach Brian Shaner.

The Dragons have three starters back on offense including wide receiver Alex Lawrence, who Shaner says has good hands and is a great leader.

There will be a new quarterback in Jordan Soda who's been in the backup role for a couple of seasons. "He's going to be the next guy to step in, he's been preparing for years," said Shaner.

Defensively, second-year coordinator Bud McSuley is back with his trademark system. "They grasp the system and we're way ahead of where we were last year," said Shaner.

Shaner calls his schedule "brutal" with the league including the opener, Thursday, August 24th against Girard.
