Muscle Connection H.S. Football Preview: Girard Indians

GIRARD, Ohio -

Over the past two seasons, the Girard football team has won five games.

That's mostly because they had a lot of young players.  This year could be the payoff for those lean seasons.

"We've had some guys that have been starting since their freshman year," said Coach Pat Pearson who has 11 three year starters back.

Junior quarterback Mark Waid threw for more than 2,600 yards last season along with 22 touchdowns. He also ran for more than 700 yards and scored 16 times.

"Mark is a special kid. He has all the tools physically and has a commitment to his players and this program," Pearson said.

But it's more than just Waid. "Michael Belcik is returning at wide receiver. We probably have five other guys we feel really good about," Pearson said.

Eight starters are back on offense and defense. Up front, they are led by Jack DelGarbino and Jameel Bannister. Defensively, the Indians have plenty of speed which allows them to do plenty of things.

They open the season August 24 against Niles.
