Warren welcomes new firefighters

Posted: Updated:
WARREN, Ohio -

Seven new firefighters were sworn into the ranks of Warren's Fire Department Wednesday morning.

The group is one of the latest in the city's attempt to beef up the ranks of police and fire crews.

In November, voters approved a levy that city leaders promised would go toward hiring emergency personnel.

Shortly before that, Warren was granted more than two million dollars in federal grant money to be used for hiring more than a dozen firefighters.

The grant money, awarded by the U.S. Department
of Homeland Security, will pay the salary of nearly 15 new firefighters this year and next.

Since then the city has said they were having difficulty finding firefighters to fill the positions. There have been informational meetings, application updates, and community led initiatives to get people to apply for the open positions.

Earlier this year the city welcomed nine new firefighters to their ranks- as part of the promise to hire more crews.
