YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

A student at Youngstown State University started a petition to remove Ma'lik Richmond from the football team.

Richmond is a YSU football player who was convicted and served time for the 2012 rape of a sixteen-year-old girl in Steubenville when he was still in high school.

The petition to remove Richmond from the team now has 10,479 signatures out of the 15,000 goal.

A second petition to keep him on the team has 997 signatures out of the goal of 2,000.

Richmond has been practicing with the team for several months now, but his criminal history became an issue when the information became public last week.

The petition to keep Richmond off the team will be sent to YSU President Jim Tressel and head football coach Bo Pellini, according to the website.
